Dr. Paulette Osamor, MD
Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist
Dr. Osamor is a compassionate board-eligible psychiatrist, whose passion for mental health drives her desire to provide psychiatric care to individuals from all walks of life. She was born and raised in Houston, Texas and graduated with her bachelors in biology from the University of Houston. Prior to beginning her medical studies and obtaining her Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas, she worked as an educator in disadvantaged communities, and has a passion for teaching. She discovered her interest in the field of psychiatry early on during her medical studies, with particular interests in working in underserved communities and with disadvantaged populations. While in medical school, she spent time volunteering throughout the Galveston community including providing free care to underinsured patients, volunteering at the Children's Museum of Galveston, and participating in service-oriented extracurriculars through several student-body organizations at UTMB. Such organizations included serving as the president of Student's Together for Service (STS), the fundraiser coordinator for Student National Medical Association (SNMA), and the student liason for the Pan-African Student Society (PASS). Throughout her leadership roles within these organizations, she was able to coordinate community service opportunities, fundraising events, cultural events, and attend national conferences. She was also able to act as a mentor through SNMA for pre-medical students from disadvantaged and/or underrepresented backgrounds looin to gain admission to medical school, several of whom she keeps in touch with today.
Following graduation from UTMB, she went on to complete 3 years of general psychiatry residency training at Dell at the University of Texas-Austin. During her time at Dell, she served as the president of Fellows and Residents Enhancing and Embracing Diversity (FREED) during her second year, which aimed at supporting physicians in training and promoting diversity. She also collaborated with physician faculty within the psychiatry department and influenced curriculum changes that led to more community psychiatry exposure and work in underserved settings for future resident cohorts. Following her training at Dell, she transferred to the child psychiatry fellowship at the University of Texas San Antonio where she spent the year delving into community psychiatry within the child/adolescent population and learning what it means to navigate within systems that were challenged with limited access, resources, and funding.
Dr. Osamor prides herself on working towards eliminating health disparities within disadvantaged and underserved populations. She emphasizes the importance of community in treating patients, and focuses a good amount on exploring her patient's social factors, such as home environment, social support, financial stability, access to resources, etc., that significantly contribute to their wellbeing, both physically and mentally. She wholeheartedly believes that each part of the community, including herself as a physician, has a part to play in working towards relieving suffering for individuals. Other specific areas of interest include working with transitional-aged youth, women's mental health, and global/refugee mental health. She is excited to work alongside you as an ally, with empathy, respect, and enthusiasm on your journey towards wellness.
